Disappointment over UN vote

Helen Clark showed her characteristic drive and determination in her campaign to be UN Secretary General, and most New Zealanders will be disappointed she hasn't been selected, says the Leader of the Opposition Andrew Little.

"Helen Clark has been an extraordinary ambassador for New Zealand in her role as head of the UNDP and she would have been an outstanding Secretary General.

"The government was right to support her bid and the efforts of John Key, Murray McCully and the diplomatic service in advocating for her deserve much credit.

"Given the number of women candidates for the role it is disappointing the Security Council couldn't break from the past and demonstrate it believes in diversity at the highest levels.

“Helen Clark has borne herself with great dignity through this election process and she has been an extraordinary ambassador for New Zealand,” says Andrew Little.
