Hotel workers hit the streets

Hotel workers hit the streets

The luxurious Carlton Hotel in downtown Auckland is at the centre of an industrial dispute today over pay.

Some 60 workers walked off the job this morning for 24 hours and are now picketing the hotel in Mayoral Drive.

EPMU organiser Barry Rowan said that all the workers wanted was a three per cent pay rise.

“Most of them didn’t get anything last year,” he said. “They’re seeking a very modest rise this year, but all the company is offering is a deal equivalent of 1.8 per cent.”

The EPMU represents striking maintenance workers. Most of the other strikers are members of the Service and Food Workers Union.
