Transparency of ministerial meetings is a victory

Transparency of ministerial meetings is a victory for taxpayers

10 DECEMBER 2018
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union has welcomed the Government’s commitment to proactively release details of ministerial meetings.

Taxpayers’ Union spokesman Louis Houlbrooke says, “For once, we see a real display of transparency from this Government. Knowing who Ministers are meeting with gives real insight into who influences the expenditure of taxpayer funds.”

“Considering this information is already available under the Official Information Act, releasing it up front should be a no-brainer, and having a standard process for releasing it will ultimately save taxpayer money.”

“Local councils could learn from this policy. Any Mayor who wants to earn goodwill from ratepayers would do well to follow the Government’s example.”
