About Victim Support

Victim Support New Zealand is a nationwide free 24-hour community service for people affected by serious crime and trauma (e.g. homicide, suicide, sudden death, serious and grievous assaults, kidnapping, robbery), and civil defence emergencies (e.g. earthquakes) and search and rescue events.

In the year to 30 June 2014, Victim Support helped 30,864 people with immediate emotional support, practical information and assistance, an increase of nearly five per cent over the previous year.

It is widely accepted that victims of crime and trauma who are not provided adequate support in the immediate aftermath are at greater risk of experiencing things such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and repeat victimisation.

Victim Support helps empower victims to regain control of their lives and find strength, hope and safety in the face of a very challenging situation.

There are 645 volunteer Support Workers delivering direct services, with support from 131 paid staff based in 62 offices across New Zealand in 11 service delivery areas - nine geographical areas and two specialist services (i.e. homicide and suicide).

Volunteers are everyday Kiwis. Some are retired, many have full time jobs, men and women of many cultures and beliefs. Some volunteers have been supported as victims themselves. The support and care provided to people simply couldn’t happen without the dedication of Victim Support volunteers.

This Award-winning service is kept free through the ongoing support of its community and was recently named 2014 Community of the Year.
