Clendon Community Comes Together in Response to Fires

The Clendon community is coming together this Saturday morning to respond in a positive way to a number of recent fires which have devastated areas of the waterfront and which led to the evacuation of dozens of houses earlier this year.

A 'Friends of The Waterfront' group has been set up in response to these fires and will be launched on Saturday by holding a rubbish clean up of the affected areas.

"We want to foster pride in our waterfront and make it a safer, cleaner and more beautiful place, where people from around Manurewa will come and enjoy," says Friends of the Waterfront Spokesperson, Simeon Brown.

"By holding a rubbish clean up of the affected areas we will be starting this process by bringing the community together to take ownership of our waterfront, with a view of replanting the affected areas in the very near future.

"The Clendon community is a strong community, we love the place we live, and we want to foster pride in our surroundings and not let the negative things which have occurred along our waterfront in our recent history define our appreciation of this beautiful reserve that we all share.

"We are encouraging all residents of the Clendon community to come together on Saturday morning and be part of the solution," says Mr Brown.

The 'Friends of the Waterfront' group will then be holding a public meeting on the 29th of April to form a committee of interested residents who will meet to organise regular activities focussed on bringing the community together to continue the process of revitalisation of our waterfront.

"We have already had a lot of interest from people interested in serving on this committee, and we hope that by encouraging people to volunteer their time on Saturday morning, more people will be interested in learning about how they can also be part of the cause," concludes Mr Brown

Event Details
Date: Saturday 20 April

Time: 8am to 12pm, concluding with a free BBQ.

Where: Pitt Ave Reserve, at the end of Pitt Avenue.

Safety gear and rubbish collection materials have all been kindly provided by a variety of organisations including Auckland Council, the Manurewa Local Board, The Manukau Beautification Trust, The Clendon Residents Group and Conservation Volunteers.
