Jewish Memorial Service at Bolton Street Cemetery
A short service at the Jewish cemetery in Bolton Street memorial Park next Sunday will help the Wellington Jewish community come to terms with last week's desecration of some of the graves, said Rabbi Antony Lipman of the Wellington Hebrew Congregation and Mr Dave Moskovitz of the Wellington Progressive Jewish Congregation today.
Some prayers and readings by members of both congregations, and the traditional Kaddish, will offer solidarity to Jewish Wellingtonians who are still shaken by the damage to the historic monuments.
"We welcome anyone else who would like to join us," the organisers said. "The graves are part of Wellington's heritage as well as Jewish heritage. Others may like to show solidarity with the Jewish community against racism."
Wellington City Council Parks and Gardens staff have carefully gathered up the pieces of shattered headstones and are holding them until they can get the advice of a gravestone restoration expert who is visiting Wellington in a couple of weeks' time.
* 2.30pm Sunday 25 July 2004 at the Abraham Hort Lawn, Bolton Street Memorial Park, near the Easdale Street entrance.
