Keep pets inside - pets dying of fright over Guy Fawkes
Fireworks: Reminder to keep pets inside for next few days - pets dying of fright over Guy Fawkes
Pet owners need to keep their furry friends indoors for the next few nights as the Guy Fawkes period looks set to continue until after the weekend.
Megan Denize, founder of Inspector Spot (a service to reunite owners with missing pets,) says that because Guy Fawkes night was a wash out in most parts of the country, many people saved their fireworks to let off another night – which means the risk to the safety and wellbeing of pets is still high.
“Animals can literally die of fright, and there is nothing more frightening to a small creature than very loud bangs.
“We are receiving details of rabbits and guinea pigs dying, and horses being injured, having experienced a huge fright due to fireworks last night.”
Denize says while most people will keep their cat and dogs inside, outdoor rabbits and guinea pigs, who ordinarily may be kept outside in cages, do need to be brought in overnight as well.
“Rabbits have very big ears – imagine how loud a firework sounds to them. Bring them inside – as well as guinea pigs - and keep them somewhere like a bathroom, or laundry, with the doors closed. Anywhere that will lessen the impact of noise.”
