CoLeader in Hawkes Bay to speak on life after Aqua

30 April 2004 Media Advisory
Green Co-Leader in Hawkes Bay to speak on life after Aqua

Green Co-Leader Jeanette Fitzsimons will be visiting Hawkes' Bay on Monday as part of her nationwide campaign on New Zealand's energy options after Project Aqua. While in the region she will also be attending a rally being held by the Foreshore and Seabed Hikoi, meeting a local group campaigning to stop a controversial development at Cape Kidnappers and discussing sustainable business frameworks with an ethical finance company.

"Aqua's gone, but the problem of New Zealand's rapidly growing power consumption remains," said Ms Fitzsimons, the Green Party Spokesperson on Conservation and Energy.

"It is the Greens' contention that by using our current energy output more sensibly and by developing renewable energy sources, we can meet our energy needs without degrading our environment."

Ms Fitzsimons said the Greens are opposed to the building of a tourist facility in the cliff at Cape Kidnappers. She is concerned that an area that has an Outstanding Natural Feature designation in its district plan is not being properly protected and that the development may be an unfortunate precedent for local communities opposed to their landscapes being reserved for the enjoyment of international elites.
