TEAR Fund launches fresh appeal for funds for tents for earthquake victims.
New Zealand aid and development agency TEAR Fund has today launched a fresh appeal for funds for tents and essential winter supplies for India and Pakistan.
"Our first delivery of tents is in place, but with snows expected within the next few weeks it's a race to get more tents there first", said TEAR Fund Executive Director Stephen Tollestrup.
TEAR Fund is focusing on isolated villages in mountainous parts of India and Pakistan where it is the only international agency present.
"It's taken some fast work, but our partners on the ground have a design for large family sized tents that have double skins. Each will enable a family to survive the winter weather", Mr Tollestrup said.
Almost a million people are believed to be still without shelter. "It is simply not feasible to rebuild homes in time for winter. To survive the winter these families need shelter. This is especially so for the vulnerable: children, the elderly and those injured by the 'quake."
"As we look forward to summer in New Zealand, each day brings earthquake-affected families in Pakistan and India closer to winter. The first snows could arrive any time now", said Mr Tollestrup.
TEAR Fund has to date raised $70,000 dollars for victims. However, more will be required to provide enough tents and winter supplies in the villages TEAR Fund is working in.
Donations can be made to TEAR Fund's earthquake appeal by phoning 0800-800-777 (24hrs), or online at www.tearfund.org.nz. An instant $20 donation can also be made by phoning 0900-90-777.
