Plan for lane closure at Great North Rd interchange

Plan for lane closure at Great North Rd interchange

Drivers using Auckland’s Northwestern Motorway westbound will be affected by long term changes next week to a section of the Great North Road Interchange.

A new layout will come into use next Monday (28 September) at the west-bound exit of the interchange, which takes traffic on to Great North Road and to Pt Chevalier.

The off-ramp itself remains open, but the existing 200 metre-long exit lane approaching it will be closed. Traffic wanting to use the off-ramp will have to exit from the current westbound motorway lanes.

“Drivers wanting to leave the motorway at the interchange will no longer have a specific exit lane, so they should signal in plenty of time to alert drivers around them that they may be slowing down and exiting,” says the NZ Transport Agency’s Highways Manager Brett Gliddon.

The exit lane, which runs under the Carrington Road over bridge, is being closed as part of the Waterview Connection project so that new barriers can be built and improvements made to the road surface.

The westbound exit lane will re-open in the new year. It will be longer and safer than the existing one, and will tie-in with improvements the Transport Agency is currently making to the neighbouring St Lukes Road Interchange.

Both projects are part of the Western Ring Route, a 47-kilometre-long motorway between Albany on the North Shore and Manukau in the south. Connecting the Southwestern and Northwestern Motorways at Waterview will complete the route.

The Waterview Connection project is planned to open to traffic in early 2017. For more information visit: http://www.nzta.govt.nz/projects/waterviewconnection
