Auckland Transport passes first major public test of a CCO
Orakei ward councillor Cameron Brewer says Auckland Transport has done well taking decisive action around some of Tamaki Drive’s issues following the tragic death of a young British cyclist on Wednesday night.
“The Auckland public has been naturally pretty cynical over whether the new council-controlled organisations would represent them when they needed them most. Auckland Transport has passed the first real public test of a CCO by taking a number of quick steps to improve Tamaki Drive’s plight, including the almost instant removal of four dangerous car parks,” says Cameron Brewer.
“I take my hat off to Auckland Transport chair Mark Ford and chief executive David Warburton for their decisive action to improve Tamaki Drive. They listened to the public and the politicians on this issues and acted with real urgency.”
Mr Brewer said as ward councillor he wrote to Mr Warburton the morning after the fatality suggesting an urgent review of Tamaki Drive’s hot spots and design improvements.
“My letter was replied to with haste as to the steps they were taking. Auckland Transport’s response overall has been impressive and bodes very well for the future. This massive CCO has shown it is sensitive to the public’s calls and can act with real urgency when it counts. I commend Auckland Transport as to how it has dealt with such a terrible situation,” says Cameron Brewer.
